May 4, 2020 (Buffalo, NY) – Sentient Science, a Software as a Service provider of asset health prognostics using digital twins for rotating mechanical systems in aerospace, defense, energy and transportation markets , announces it was issued its 1st patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for DigitalClone technology applied to roller bearings. The DigitalClone platform uses digital twins to enable industrial customers to represent the health risk of assets throughout the asset life-cycle from system design through to real-world field operations. Sentient Science’s business model is to reduce failure rates of industrial equipment.
The technology was invented in the military aviation sector with large R&D grants from the U.S. government agencies including DARPA, NSF, DoD and DoE. The technology has been validated with a dataset from NASA and was granted awards from the White House and Bloomberg for decoding the material genome and for digitalizing the wind industry to extend the life and lower costs of wind assets. Sentient patent approval comes at a time when claims from over 1,000 software and similar patents were denied over the 5-year period since the U.S Supreme court Alice Ruling that rendered software and pure mathematical algorithms as effectively not patentable. DigitalClone is the “Exception to the Rule”.

The patent number, 10,474,772 – A Method and System for Predicting Surface Contact Fatigue Life of a Bearing in a Wind Turbine Generating Electricity, covers the technical approach in the DigitalClone software suite. The patent was filed by Dr. Nathan Bolander, Chief Scientist & VP Applied Technology, Sentient Science, Dr. Behrooz Jalalahmadi VP, Life Extension Solutions & Additive Manufacturing, Sentient Science and Dr. Raja Pulikollu, former Chief Materials Scientist at Sentient Science. Under Sentient’s patent strategy, the company will file additional patents for other subcomponents and systems across multiple industries. The technology was commercialized in 2013, after 10 years of R&D and a series of technical and commercial validations with partners such as the DoD, DoE, NASA. DigitalClone is now used by operators and OEMs in renewables, aviation and transportation markets globally.
