The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers has recognized Sentient Science’s Harpal Singh, Ph.D., for his research paper on solid lubricants.
Dr. Singh received the Al Sonntag Award last week at the STLE annual meeting. The award, established in 1983, honors the STLE member(s) who published the best technical paper during the prior year. It is named for the pioneer leader in the specialized field of solid lubricants.
Dry or solid lubricants are materials that, despite being in the solid phase, are able to reduce friction between two surfaces sliding against each other without the need for a liquid oil medium. The study, completed by Dr. Singh and Dr. Gary L. Doll, of the University of Akron, tested bearings and and gears using a Chameleon-type coating in humid, vacuum and dry atmospheres. They tested the coating with base oil and found it increased life by a factor of 2x when it used the coating as compared to base oil only. It was concluded that the coating functioned as an additive in oil.
